The West University of Timișoara was officially founded in December 30, 1944 by Decree-Law no. 660, promulgated by King Mihai I. After almost eighty years, West University of Timișoara is today a bastion of higher education in Romania, the largest university in Eastern Europe, totaling 15,000 students in 11 faculties. The West University of Timișoara, with its very wide range of fields and specializations – from vocational areas (art, music, theater, sport), social (sociology, psychology, political sciences), economic, philological to science (mathematics, informatics, physics, chemistry) looms large on the global education market as a regional leader with significant connections to the international academic community both in terms of scientific research and study programs.
Our university has ongoing relationships with over 200 universities worldwide. WUT is part of the UNITA European Alliance together with: Università degli studi di Torino (Italy), Université de Pau et des Pays de l’Adour (France), Université Savoie Mont Blanc (France), Universidad de Zaragoza (Spain) and Universidade Beira Interior (Portugal). The consortium brings together universities whose communities total over 160,000 students, from five European countries speaking Romance languages, and which operate in geographical, cultural and socio-economic border ecosystems. In these partnerships, hundreds of students and teachers are taking training courses, master classes, preparing a PhD and participating in postdoctoral programs abroad.
International recognition is reflected in WUT’S more than 90 bilateral agreements with major universities around the world. WUT has its well-deserved place in numerous rank tops based on high standards both in education and in research.
