Informations to participants

Timișoara is a city located in western Romania, near the border with Hungary. It is the capital of Timiș county and one of the largest cities in the country.

Timișoara has a rich history, having been founded in the 12th century. It was once part of the Ottoman Empire and later became a major center of trade and culture in the Austro-Hungarian Empire. During the 20th century, Timișoara played a significant role in Romania’s history, as it was the birthplace of the country’s 1989 Revolution, which led to the fall of Communism in Romania.

Today, Timișoara is known for its cultural and architectural heritage, as well as its modern industries and universities. The city has many beautiful parks, museums, and historic landmarks, including the Timișoara Orthodox Cathedral and the Timișoara Botanical Garden. It is also home to a thriving cultural scene, with numerous theaters, music venues, and festivals.

In addition to its rich history and culture, Timișoara is also a hub of innovation and entrepreneurship, with a growing technology sector and a vibrant startup ecosystem. It is often referred to as the „Little Vienna” due to its elegant architecture, green spaces, and cosmopolitan atmosphere.

This year, together with Elefsina (Greece) and Veszprém (Hungary), Timisoara is one of the European Capital of Culture. More details about cultural events can be found here: https://opening.timisoara2023.eu/en/highlights/
